Looking ahead: reducing our environmental impact
UWC’s Climate Action and Leadership Initiative set out a movement-wide commitment to climate responsibility. The next phase centres on measurable reduction.
UWC completed a movement-wide environmental impact audit in 2025 across its 18 schools and 20 campuses. Schools aligned around shared indicators for carbon emissions, energy use and water consumption, creating a common baseline for action.
These figures relate directly to how campuses operate and how students learn. Energy systems, food production, land use and water management are visible parts of daily life. Students analyse this data, question assumptions and contribute to practical changes on their own campuses.
Student-led projects are now connected through shared sustainability goals. Operational decisions impact academic work, and academic study informs operational change.
Each school will pursue reductions in ways that reflect its geography, infrastructure and climate.
“This isn’t about league tables or comparison. It’s about giving schools better information they can actually use, and building a shared baseline on UWC’s journey to climate neutrality.”
